Improved Forage Quality in Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) via Selection for Increased Stem Fiber Digestibility

نویسندگان

چکیده

The low digestibility of fiber in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) limits dry matter intake and energy availability ruminant animal production systems. Previously, plants were identified for or high rapid (16 h) potential (96 vitro neutral detergent (IVNDFD) plant stems. Here, two cycles bidirectional selection 16 h 96 IVNDFD carried out. resulting populations evaluated total herbage, percentage stems to biomass, IVNDFD, (NDF), acid lignin as a proportion NDF (ADL/NDF) at three maturity stages. Within these populations, was highly heritable (h2 = 0.71), while had lower heritability 0.46). Selection reduced ADL/NDF the late flowering green pod stages seasonal variability stem but did not alter Stability analyses across 12 harvest environments found that little effect on environmental stability trait compared unselected population. Thus, effective strategy developing with improved nutritional quality without changing biomass.

Genome-Wide Association Mapping and Genomic Selection for Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) Forage Quality Traits

Genetic progress for forage quality has been poor in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), the most-grown forage legume worldwide. This study aimed at exploring opportunities for marker-assisted selection (MAS) and genomic selection of forage quality traits based on breeding values of parent plants. Some 154 genotypes from a broadly-based reference population were genotyped by genotyping-by-sequencing ...

Association Mapping for Fiber-Related Traits and Digestibility in Alfalfa (Medicago sativa)

Association mapping is a powerful approach for exploring the molecular genetic basis of complex quantitative traits. An alfalfa (Medicago sativa) association panel comprised of 336 genotypes from 75 alfalfa accessions represented by four to eight genotypes for each accession. Each genotype was genotyped using 85 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers and phenotyped for five fiber-related traits i...

Cultivation of Alfalfa (medicago Sativa L)

Madicago sativa Linn, commonly known as 'Alfalfa', is a tonic plant rich in proteins, minerals, enzymes and vitamins, Bulk quantity of the whole plant is required in the pharmaceutical industries especially in homoecopathic pharmacies, Hence, there is a great need to cultivate this plant for sustained supply of the drug. Use of good and adequate phosphatecontaining farm yard manure, timely irri...

Abstract Withholding alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) irri-

Withholding alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) irrigations during the summer, a practice referred to as summer irrigation termination (SIT), can conserve substantial amounts of water in long-season desert environments; however, plant mortality associated with SIT may be substantial. Proper timing of re-irrigation is critical for minimizing mortality and yield reductions following SIT. Procedures that...

Evaluation and selection for salinity stress tolerance in Iranian promising alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) ecotypes

To improve salinity stress tolerance in Iranian promising alfalfa ecotypes, including Shorkat, Gharghologh, Gharaghozloo, Rehnani, Roodasht Isfahan and Gavkhooni, a recurrent selection scheme was carried out at roodasht and kabootarabad field stations, Isfahan, Iran, during 2012-2017 growing seasons. Six Iranian promising alfalfa ecotypes were planted in the autumn of 2012 and irrigated with sa...
